2010 Spring/Summer Learn-to-Row

E-mail Print PDF
With the on-water season just over 1 months away, I have received quite a few emails about our popular summer Learn-to-Row classes.  My apologies if I am not able to answer your emails right away, there is a lot of emails to go through.  We are still planning for the upcoming 2010 season, exact information are not available at this time.  But here's some general information that should address some of the questions:

1.  How often do classes run and how long do they run for?
Two sessions are offered per month, either  Mon-Wed or Tues-Thurs.  They run for 3 weeks, 2x a week for a total of 6 lessons.

2.  What time do classes start and end?
Classes typically start at 6:30pm and end around 8:30pm-9ish

3.  Where are the classes held
Classes involve indoor and outdoor activities.  Indoor portion is done in our indoor rowing tank.  Outdoor is on the North Sasakatchewan River.  Both indoor rowing tank and boathouse are located north of the Valley Zoo, at the south end of Laurier Park nearby the off-leash area.

4.  Do I need to be a member to take these classes?
No, LTR classes are for everybody.  Do note that the course fee can be credited towards full year ERC membership.

5.  How much does it cost?
The cost per person for 2009 was $175.

6.  I have never rowed before or done any canoeing, do I need any prior experience?
No, LTR are designed for complete beginners.  We will teach you everything you need to start piloting a rowing shell on your own.

7.  Do I need to buy equipments?
No, ERC provide all the equipments needed.

8.  What happens after LTR is over?
You are free to try out other types of boats in the fleet or make up classes the week after your session is completed.  Afterwards, you can join the recreation program, masters, or competitive rowing.  Additionally, you may participate in rowing tour (day trip or weekend trip to the lakes in the Rockies like Maligne Lake, Morraine Lake) in the summer, depending on availability and interest.

9.  I took LTR many years ago.  Should I take LTR again?
Depends on how comfortable you are with your skills.  Keep in mind that you course fee does go towards your ERC membership fee, so you won't be paying extra.  If you are not comfortable jumping into the programs right away, you may take the course again and transit into other programs afterwards.

10.  I took LTR before, does my course fee from that year go to the 2010 membership fee?
No, credit is only valid for the same fiscal year (May 2009 - Apr 2010).

11.  Is there an age limit for LTR?
LTR is typically geared towards adults 18 and over.  For those 18 and under, we have a highschool program for indoor and outdoor activities

12.  Where can I get more updated information?
Subscribe to the learn-to-row mailing list and I will keep you posted

Tour of ERC

E-mail Print PDF
The ERC indoor training facility made its debut in 1995. The building houses a modest state-of-the-art indoor rowing tank which provides ongoing technique development to our members throughout the winter months despite the frozen river. It also serves as a starting point for the would-be rowers to help them learn the basic movements of rowing. There are two parts to the facility, a multifunctional area and the rowing tank itself.
